I’ve always been a little skittish about playing online casino games using real money. My gambling successes at Las Vegas casinos have been very infrequent, so I wouldn’t expect to do any better in the virtual world.
But playing online slots for free with the chance of winning free stuff at big name Vegas casinos sounds to me like a much safer bet. That’s the idea behind myVEGAS Slots, a collection of digital slot machines that play your way to casino comps.
The virtual slot machines function like the ones found at casinos in Las Vegas and other legal gambling establishments. Players bet a selected amount of credits – virtual chips – and spin the wheels in the hope of matching numbers or characters in different combinations.
But instead of spewing out quarters, the online slots reward winners with points that they can redeem at some of the city’s best-known resorts. The game is linked to the MGM family of casinos, including Aria, The Bellagio, Luxor, Excalibur, the MGM Grand and The Mirage. The freebies include other non-casino items such as Royal Caribbean cruises and even day passes on the Las Vegas Monorail.
Winning tokens on myVEGAS Slots is like many other customer loyalty programs offered by hotels, restaurants and other businesses. The more often you use the myVEGAS Slots app and the more tokens you win, the closer you get to a free dinner or hotel room.

The game has been available on Facebook for about four years and now it can also be played on apps for Apple and Android mobile devices. Both the mobile apps and the Facebook game can be linked to a single account so that a player’s loyalty points will be up to date regardless of the platform they use.
I spent about a week spinning the slot wheels on the iOS version of myVEGAS Slots, which is one of the most engaging and responsive entertainment apps that I’ve ever used. Although I seldom play the slots on my annual trips to Vegas or my infrequent visits to a nearby riverboat casino, I was all in with this virtual version.
The game gets you started by awarding a stack of chips when you register, more when you link the mobile app to the Facebook version and an additional daily ration just for launching the game and trying a few spins.
myVEGAS Slots has more than a dozen different games, but new players start out spinning for kings and queens at Excalibur. The other games become available as your point total increases and you move up to higher levels. A pop-up dashboard lets you set your bet limit and select an auto spin option, which is also controlled by your score.
There are a variety of ways to build your chip and token count. For example, you can buy stacks of chips starting at $4.99. And free spins, a roulette wheel and mini games arrive more often than I expected. And if your current game isn’t paying off as often as you’d like, take a break with mySTRIP, a virtual stroll down Las Vegas Boulevard that will drop you into a different game for a special challenge.
For me, myVEGAS Slots turned out to be a great way to kill time while pursuing some significant and valuable rewards. But while the swag may be free, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to snag. After several days if intermittent play, my stack of tokens was barely enough to get a gelato at the Bellagio.
The myVEGAS Slots app is available as a free download for iOS devices in the iTunes App Store:
A version for Android devices is also available in the Google Play Store:
